Thanks-for-giving – An Attitude of Gratitude

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.” Psalm 95:1-2

There are 52 Bible verses with the phrase “give thanks.” In this, we are reminded that we should give thanks every week and every Shabbat. No matter what happened during the other 6 days, we have a reason to be grateful. Only in God do we have true rest for our souls. Let us maintain an attitude of gratitude this year. Here are just a few reasons to thank and praise Him:

Messiah and His Sacrifice
“And He (Yeshua) took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:19-20

Salvation
“But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Messiah Yeshua.” 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

For Your miracles
“We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.” Psalm 75:1

For Your faithfulness and lovingkindness
“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night.” Psalm 92:1-2

For our children and our children’s children
“So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever;
we will show forth Your praise to all generations.” Psalm 79:13

For Believers

God’s Holiness

Mercy
“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:33-35

For eternity with Him
“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.” Psalm 30:11-12

Reconciliation and Victory
“Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the Gentiles, to give thanks to Your holy name, to triumph in Your praise.” Psalm 106:47

God’s Goodness
“Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” Psalm 107:15

True Judge
“At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your righteous judgments.” Psalm 119:62

Jerusalem
“Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together, where the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD, to the Testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. For thrones are set there for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.” Psalm 122:3-5

Righteous Gentiles
“Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Messiah Yeshua, who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.” Romans 16:3-4

Righteous King
“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because You have taken Your great power and reigned. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear Your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth.” Revelation 11:17-18

His Presence
“Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence.” Psalm 140:13

For EVERYTHING

We take so much for granted each and every day, thinking of how “lucky” we have been only when threatened with loss. We need to be thankful we wake up, we can use the bathroom, we make it to work safely, we have transportation (whether it’s our own vehicle or someone providing a ride). Even when we are going through difficult times, not enough money or food or housing, if we just honestly look around we can still find so much to be thankful for. Like loving people who lend a hand, a stranger who holds a door and gives a warm greeting, a stranger paying the difference at the register when you don’t have enough – there are countless blessings all around, just waiting to be acknowledged. Thank you for reminding me to be thankful in all things!
